nextian: Wayward Vagabond raising his red flag of justice on the battlefield. (rise up)
I would like to reproduce what I found in my entry box just now:

"gusy i am unbelievably drunk right now

Like, drunker than I have been in a very"

I also have a sticky note reading "you didn't hit on anyone in appropriate but you did calll eli", Eli being my younger brother.

It appears that I had a good weekend!

Anyway, three things:

1. Bidding on [livejournal.com profile] help_japan ends on the 31st. My offers are still fic and in-person-delivery baked goods. I assure you, those baked goods are delicious.

2. [livejournal.com profile] homestuck1000, in the vein of [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000; the goal is 1000 fanworks for 1000 pairings. Of course immediately after posting this like a bajillion places I noticed disfluencies and html issues in the fic I started off with, and had to delete the comment and fix all the links, but, DETAILS.

3. While I believe that everyone to whom it will be relevant has already seen this, I finished my Sweeney Todd/Homestuck fusion and gave it a real title: swing that razor high. Perhaps, one day, I will also finish my Lion in Winter fusion. Perhaps one day I will even finish my thesis! Oh, these jokes I tell myself, to warm my soul.

Oh! Four things, actually, because, 4. I saw Sucker Punch. I have many, many questions for Zack Snyder. They begin with "seriously, she pictures that in her own subconscious?" and end with "WHY MUST YOU MAKE ME ENJOY YOUR MOVIES?"
nextian: Two lovers, drowning. (not feel the drowning)
First things first: check out [community profile] help_japan and [livejournal.com profile] help_japan if you prefer the fannish auction method of donation! I'm offering fic and, because I'm sad I can't offer a song this time, in-person baked goods to anyone living between San Diego and Santa Barbara.

Bonus for people on my journal: If you're a Bay Area person, and you don't mind waiting until summer (which is when I get home), go ahead and bid. I'll deliver up to Petaluma, out to Stockton, and down to San Jose.

... No one is going to bid on this, are they.

So on the recommendation of [livejournal.com profile] vega_ofthe_lyre I read all of Crown Duel today while out on a four-hour walk. (When I started, it was so hazy you could not see the mountains which are approximately four miles from my house. I always think I'm making up these conditions, and then they happen again.) I liked it. I think if I'd read it in seventh grade I would have loved it so much that I would even now still be trying to get everyone else I've ever met to read it, and occasionally peppering my conversation with references to the romance of the ~ekirth ring~. Now, unfortunately, my thought process goes, "Oh, it's like Captive Prince, but het, and Damen is actually as Untutored A Barbarian as everyone thinks he is."

I really need to just bite the bullet and read Dunnett, instead of reading all of her knockoffs and inspirations, but I will say that one thing I deeply, deeply appreciate about Captive Prince is that Laurent is as much of a bastard as the main villain of the second half. In fact there is one point where said villain is posturing in black clothing that sets off his sparkly blond hair and I almost choked to death. Meanwhile the main hero Vidaric is hot and all and I adore all his subtle eyegestures of humor and strongly support Sherwood Smith's decision to have lots of scenes in which the heroine cuts straight through his bullshit, but, like, I guess the difference between Vidaric and Laurent is that Vidaric is from those productions of Macbeth in which Malcolm is testing Macduff when he lists all the horrible things he wants to do, and Laurent is from those productions of Macbeth where Malcolm is being at least partially honest, and wants to know if Macduff can be trusted to take him down should his appetites get out of hand.

Yes, I too have noticed the weird trend where my blog has become Captive Prince Appreciation Station. I don't know what to tell you.

I did spend a good portion of those four hours yelling at Mel, the heroine. I don't mean, like, quietly, in my head. I mean, I wandered into a gated community at one point, because I thought it was a shortcut, and I knew I was a sweaty chick with a massive backpack and there were these two cops there whose jobs were to prevent trespassers, and I was thinking, "Okay, stay cool," and then Mel IGNORED THE ENTIRE YEAR OF VIDARIC BEING NICE TO HER IN ORDER TO POINTLESSLY MISTRUST HIM AND ENDANGER THE COUNTRY AGAIN and I hissed JESUS CHRIST, COME THE FUCK ON really loud just as I passed the cop car. Not my finest moment. When she wasn't in charge of political machinations, though, she was pretty cool. I like the part where she steals a bright white horse in the middle of a manhunt because she knows she's gotta go out with panache.

FA has withdrawn their request for a Pepsi Refresh grant!

[personal profile] bethbethbeth rounded up some of the reactions I'd been paying the closest attention to, about the devaluation of art that goes along with some of the rhetoric being used in this debate. Obviously, some of the rhetoric they object to is stuff I said! I say that not just because I have noticed (and winced) at some of my own inconsistencies in the original email, and in the first rash of comments, but because there are things I just flat-out disagree on. But they are very interesting posts and if you feel that I was perhaps a bit hyperbolic in my approach, here are some commenters who agree with you!

(For the record, a list of the things I definitely do not disagree with:

1. Arts should be funded. No shit. Arts should get money. Arts should get public money. Arts education should get public money. Arts causes are not less worthy than social justice ones; they are just, generally, in a different category.

2. Fanfiction is an art. Sorry! I totally think fandom is artistic. Whether or not the bulk of it is good art has nothing to do with its status as art. Thanks [personal profile] holyschist and [personal profile] seekingferret for logic-checking me on that.

3. The vast majority of charitable giving comes out of a fixed income or a fixed economy, and is thus a zero sum game in the classical sense. Thanks [personal profile] sapote for the logic check on that one. I hope my point is still clear even without the econ fail.

4. Pepsi Refresh is seriously fucked up. FACT.)

Also, DA continues to fail spectacularly at everything including genders, news at eleven.

Also also, this originally said "DW" continues to fail spectacularly. I hope that did not confuse too many people at 1:00 AM PST. XD

I'm offering an original (or fannish) song on a topic of your choice, and fic of about five hundred words.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] sotto_voice is doing her cookie packages again. I got one in the last auction and it was delicious; chocolate oatmeal fudge cookies. Normally I find oatmeal a bit daunting. These vanished like, well, delicious cookies on a summer day. They also tied extremely well into the fic she handwrote for me on legal paper, which is what I would refer to as "lethally adorable." GO BID ON THEM.

1. [community profile] purimgifts has come. Signups. Please consider signing up for this! It's less stress than Yuletide -- the spirit of Christmas is stuffed goose, the spirit of Purim is delicious cookies -- and it's run by our friendly local [personal profile] roga and [personal profile] marina, which, come on! You need more endorsement?

2. [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti is still open until the 20th.

3. [personal profile] crossedwires/[livejournal.com profile] handyhunter made a post that chromatically cast comics characters. (Alliteration, it's what's for dinner.) Then [personal profile] bossymarmalade did Marvel/X-Men and [personal profile] liviapenn did more Marvel and, you know, where is the DC love?

So, Lucifer, or at least Lucifer up to issue 38 which is where I am. Under the cut.

yes, this is a really cheap excuse to cast my new crush as Lucifer )

I'm not a supporter of Mousavi? But the incumbent is still Ahmadinejad. So I'm wearing some internet green.

The go-to post.

There's some debate going on about whether or not you should change your Twitter location and time zone to Tehran and GMT +3:30. Those with better information should comment regarding it. I went for it, because what's the harm?

This is a white American guy, but it is helping me make sense of it. He quotes an Iranian twitter: If Iran sleeps tonight, it will sleep forever.
nextian: A woman in male period dress, holding a book, with a speech bubble reading "&?" (&?)
This isn't directed at anyone in particular, but I used to hold somewhat different principles and it's probably time to check in. This post is by its nature directed towards the white folks on my flist, but just about everyone I know checks one of the privilege boxes, so if you are a PoC try running a search/replace on this in your mind and continue on.

I've been reading a lot of [livejournal.com profile] debunkingwhite and [livejournal.com profile] metafandom lately, among others (I'll give links in comments but I don't want to clutter the post) and I've started seeing a pattern that I recognize uncomfortably in my own history, viz: I don't understand why we have to talk about [issue, usually racism]. Things could be so much worse, and I'd rather just kick back and enjoy the show. I talked about this in the context of offense last month, but I'd like to clarify.

I completely understand that it is hard to think about racism. It is a painful topic and most of my favorite authors or artists of any stripe exhibit racist behavior, which is something I'd rather not acknowledge. Furthermore, if, like I did, you grew up in an extremely liberal environment, you grow very tired of the endless rhetoric. People are reactionary by nature and if you're taught that it's Good to be PC, you're likely to speak out and say offensive things as a form of being edgy. I understand all of this. It's hard and it's sometimes boring if you're white and it gets all over everything.

But the thing is, it's also really, really hard to be discriminated against.

I am Jewish, queer, and female, and none of these things allows me to stop being racist, classist, and ableist. As a part of a system that supports these distinctions, I will always be racist, classist, and ableist. And therefore I am never off the hook. Because I love and respect you guys, I am not going to let people off the hook around here either.

It is not okay to be "colorblind". It is not okay to be "tired of talking about racism". It is not okay to claim to be "not responsible for what other people of my skin color do". In fact, please just don't fill out any of the squares on White Liberal Bingo. And of course the same goes for any other system of oppression.

Okay. This has gotten more intense than I meant it to, so I'm going to stop the post here. If you'd like any clarification on any of this, this is a good post to comment in. Since I come from a place of privilege I am not yet tired of trying to educate.

The brutal honesty meme is going around again! and it's probably worth mentioning that my email is nextian aaaaaat gmail dddoooooot com and every day is brutal honesty day around here, because, as recently proved in many venues, I am not very good at shutting up when I ought to, so that should go both ways. I screw up a lot and I want to know, always, so I can fix it, so if I've made you unhappy somehow recently please: email me and let me know. Even if we are not close; I promise I'll listen.

Anyway, I promised the next one wouldn't be a thinky post, so here is something that has made me really happy. Under the cut is a video of a Well Known Performer singing a Well Known Song. ... About transvestites. SFW, but not safe for libido/brain )

So this is the last time I get to stay up until four in the morning, not getting anything done.

For those of you who followed the saga last term, I am not a good person academically. I don't focus, I don't turn in homework on time, I skip class for no good reason, and for the first time in my life I'm getting the grades that I deserve. This needs to stop. I am too smart a kid to get Cs, even at the University of Chicago, without being damn sure that a C is what I actually deserve based on my intelligence, and if that's the case then you will probably next hear from me when I drive my car off a cliff. (Don't worry, you guys, I don't have a car.)

I'm going on hiatus until I can finish my week's worth of homework within the actual week. This isn't a lofty goal. This may be next week, Wednesday, after Arabic class. But I am goddamn well going to do it. This entails no more LJ posts until then, and it also means no more IM.

There are a few people on my flist (you absolutely know who you are) with whom I basically have no other contact, and trust me, if I talk to you on IM in an extensive way, it means that you are one of my close close friends and I fucking hate that this will cut out my one form of contact with you. If I talk to you on IM in an extensive way, you already have my cell phone number, or you have me friended on Facebook where my cell phone number is part of a public group. Please feel free to call me, or write me a long rambly email, or -- if you're Zoe and a saint -- write me letters that just barely squeeze in under the weight requirement. Or pop me a quick line, whatever. But IM is out. And so is Skype. And so is active participation in LJ.

I am too good to do this to myself.

Thank you -- all of you -- for your very kind best wishes and offers of shotgun in the getaway car. Those of you who suggested they were ducking for cover, I will aim for you next time I am driving in your state.

I saw Sweeney Todd on Tuesday (along with .02 seconds of [livejournal.com profile] olivia_circe) and Mamma Mia! last night. I also, you know, lived through Rosh Hashana. However, all my thoughts on yaoi these multifarious topics will have to wait until later, because I'm getting on a plane to Chicago this morning. So. Uh.

I love you all! and am declaring:

hiatus

until I am better settled in.

Wish me luck.

We would like to know who really believes in gay rights on livejournal. There is no bribe of a miracle or anything like that. If you truly believe in gay rights, then repost this and title the post as "Gay Rights". If you don't believe in gay rights, then just ignore this. Thanks.

(but I still believe what I said last time, which is that this is one step above chain mail, and if you don't post it I will applaud you for your quiet devotion to the cause)

Surprise surprise! (July, July.) The computer up here has excitingly decided not to work, which means that the only really slow dial-up access I have is this school line that ... I think it's, what, half an hour of free access? Only the number's long-distance so I'm not so sure about this whole "free" thing. Anna? Any hints?

Anyway. This means that I will seriously not be around, to a degree that I did not previously understand. I weep, hugely, for this.

Please leave long rambly comments on this post about your life, as it will be very difficult for me to check my flist, but easier for me to check my Gmail. I love all of you like mad and will see you in ... a week and then again in another week.

Well here I am and here I go -- I've just returned from a school trip to HELL in the desert, and I'm going to SLIGHTLY LESS HELL in the tropics. (No, it's Hawaii. It'll be chill.)

As such I may have missed/may miss announcements, importantthings, fics, you all being interesting. So! Please catch me up on what I missed in your life in the comments!

I will have very limited net access, wireless not being available. Sorry arugh.

Love you all and must go, the taxi awaits ...

P. S. If you have read and reviewed China Miéville in your journal -- [livejournal.com profile] limyaael and [livejournal.com profile] erythros, I'm looking at you, I thought I remembered something from the two of you, no? yes? maybe? -- please leave a link to that too! As I have just vastly enjoyed Perdido Street Station through to Iron Council and and and. AND. So wonderful.
