CHAG SAMEACH, EVERYBODY.

In a weird way, this is as much my thesis as my actual thesis, considering I've been working on some form of this story for four years, and this iteration since August. So, so many thanks to [personal profile] aria for beta and for telling me to get over myself and post it already.

This is eleven thousand words long (I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO I AM ANYMORE); it's eyai fic (primer is here, masterlist is here). Contains abuse of power, governmental collapse, journalistic excellence, murder, and no hansom cabs at all.

ETA: Oh, god, I'm actually sticking an ETA on this because it's freaking me out so much. YOU GUYS, I APOLOGIZE SO, SO MUCH FOR ONE PARTICULAR PLOT POINT IN THIS. SO MUCH. I WOULD CLAIM IT WASN'T MY IDEA, BUT THAT WOULD ONLY BE ONE TINY, TINY FRACTION OF THE TRUTH.

I would like to reproduce what I found in my entry box just now:

"gusy i am unbelievably drunk right now

Like, drunker than I have been in a very"

I also have a sticky note reading "you didn't hit on anyone in appropriate but you did calll eli", Eli being my younger brother.

It appears that I had a good weekend!

Anyway, three things:

1. Bidding on [livejournal.com profile] help_japan ends on the 31st. My offers are still fic and in-person-delivery baked goods. I assure you, those baked goods are delicious.

2. [livejournal.com profile] homestuck1000, in the vein of [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000; the goal is 1000 fanworks for 1000 pairings. Of course immediately after posting this like a bajillion places I noticed disfluencies and html issues in the fic I started off with, and had to delete the comment and fix all the links, but, DETAILS.

3. While I believe that everyone to whom it will be relevant has already seen this, I finished my Sweeney Todd/Homestuck fusion and gave it a real title: swing that razor high. Perhaps, one day, I will also finish my Lion in Winter fusion. Perhaps one day I will even finish my thesis! Oh, these jokes I tell myself, to warm my soul.

Oh! Four things, actually, because, 4. I saw Sucker Punch. I have many, many questions for Zack Snyder. They begin with "seriously, she pictures that in her own subconscious?" and end with "WHY MUST YOU MAKE ME ENJOY YOUR MOVIES?"
nextian: Bang Bang from the Brothers Bloom, aiming her gun. (bang bang kiss kiss)
I'm not sure this is the actual purpose of International Women's Day, but considering I started it out with reblogging a Rugrats/Gold Digger/99 Problems mashup, I think I will take this baby step. XD

Name a female character I have ever written (or one I haven't and you think I can!) and I will attempt a drabble about her.

If you give me a keyword, lyric, or picture I will use it if it sparks something for me.

Also, Today In Research: Henry B. Hawes, you're a nice guy and all, but in 1933, you probably should not have told the Philippines that "no it's totally cool Japan will have its hands full for generations with Manchuria."

This is for poor, poor [livejournal.com profile] astridv, who bought me in [livejournal.com profile] help_pakistan, back in August. Her request was for Riza rescuing Roy. I hope that this somewhat qualifies, and that she does not hate me for all of ever, though I would in fact understand.

Credit to [livejournal.com profile] schellibie for my favorite joke, and to [personal profile] prodigy for ... uh ... this.

in between the apples and the chloroform, ~600 words, Fullmetal Alchemist manga/Brotherhood. No warnings. Roy/Riza.

nextian: "Oh, Bert," Ernie said breathlessly, "your felt makes me ticklish all over." (yuletide)
I wrote two stories for this year's Yuletide!

For LeeSide, who has no journal that I can find, I wrote Monte Carlo Doctrine fic. Monte Carlo Doctrine is a four-panel webcomic by [personal profile] odditycollector which ran for 37 comics (and if you like A Softer World, I urge you to go check it out, because it's a very similar sense of humor) so I knew the fandom for this was going to be tiny, but what I didn't count on was that the fandom for this was going to be me and [personal profile] livrelibre, who was my If on a winter's night... recip last year, and who wrote a treat for LeeSide as well taking the opposite view. And you should read it! Hers is Love Rain. Ah, Yuletide, home of the metafictional coincidence.

Mine is other ghosts. You need zero knowledge of the canon to read it, but since it's eight four-panel comics it's a very quick read: here. If I did a ficmeme about favorite unappreciated stories, this would, inexplicably, be it (inexplicably because I spent much of December hating it) and I think some of you might like it a lot, so, you know. S-self-rec?

The other fic I wrote was you're gonna leave them all behind, for [personal profile] starlady, and it was Disney Princess Superheroes fic (based on a piece of art by [deviantart.com profile] kreugan.) This one was a lot of fun to write and now I have to go see the Frog Princess finally jesus christ. Though I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for naming it after "Firework".

That pretty much concludes our Yuletide programming for the year, though there might be one more post of post-reveal recs, because shit, people on my flist can write. Have you noticed this? It may have come up occasionally.

ETA: Oh! And! Speaking of metafictional shenanigans! [personal profile] odditycollector wrote me a Deeba haiku for Madness and I totally missed it until today. It is delightful. Go read it!

What is this doing here, this is none of the fics I have ever wanted to write.

361 words of FMA(:B) Roy/Riza nonsense, because sometimes, you watch an entire show in two weeks, and then your heart explodes, I guess. And you forget to pack to go back to college.

I'm off to Boston till Sunday! Have fic for Homestuck. folk etymologies, 4600 words, Rose and Terezi Vs. The World.

(I wrote it for femgen, forgot that I'd signed up, posted it to the forums, remembered that hey maybe I should post it to that challenge I signed up for, started reading through the rules, and realized they don't allow trans women. WHOOPS. You know what? Not the day after Judge Walker hit a motherfucking grand slam for rights.)

(Finding out about said grand slam for rights in a legal aid office:

LAWYER #1's EMAIL, THIRTY SECONDS BEFORE THE NEWS BREAKS: It's on Twitter!!
THE WHOLE OFFICE: *cheers*
LAWYER #2: Ah, shit, who cares, it's going straight to appeal anyway.

SO JADED.)

Oh, boy, you go read-only on media fandom for like a week and you come back and everyone's pissing on all the lawns. I ... am not going to make a post about any of those things, because currently my day job involves reading about problems I not only can't fix but have to actively deny, so ... don't really have the energy for that! But here is a protip: if your story hurts someone, the way to apologize is not to say "I'm sorry you were hurt."

Here's some stuff from the ladyficathon (which is ongoing.)

You guys, you guys! I got podficced! By the EXTREMELY excellent [personal profile] luzula, whose voice is just so crunchy and wonderful. She did On the Initial Conditions of a Partnership (Amram/Zelikman) and Lovelace and Babbage vs. the Christmas Death Spider from Beyond the Atlantic, a title I regret making up now that I have to type it out one more time (Lovelace and Babbage). They're both wonderful. I love the first one best, partially because of the way she says "Amram" and partially because she has this lyrical style and it works very well (see also: her reading of [personal profile] fahye's Tempest fic "Genesis" and [personal profile] sinope's Ravens in Winter.)

I signed up for [community profile] dark_agenda's chromatic character fest, where you rewrite a canonically white character as chromatic and then deal with the consequences. It's 500 words or more and low-pressure, so y'all should sign up.

and now, a painting what I did on the computer )
nextian: Sulu from the promo posters. (sulu is the boss)
At long last, my [livejournal.com profile] trekreversebang fic. (I ... think this is the second longest thing I've ever written. And the longest continuous. That's ... pretty sad.)

Now with AO3 mirror!

Title: where you got lost, how you got by
Pairing: Sulu/Chekov (with a healthy dose of team and Spock/Uhura)
Warnings/Rating: It's a spy drama. Specifics are classified: bruising consensual sex, gunfire, character with PTSD, sixties alcoholism.
Summary: In 1963, Sulu moves to Hong Kong, which is his first mistake.
Notes: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rosivan (of course) and [personal profile] anekdot (as always). You can comment on [livejournal.com profile] rosivan's awesome art here. Wikipedia, Google Maps, photo archives, the New Pornographers, George Takei, and Stella Dong's Shanghai are beautiful resources for which the world should give thanks en masse. And some apologies to John Le Carré ... but not many.

Sulu's hand is hot on the gun, and he says, 'Come and get me.' )
nextian: Boots on a shelf. (black and shiny)
Last night I finished an erasure for [profile] erasureathon. It was fun! I ... sort of cheated, I guess, in that I didn't make a poem but instead a new fic, but it was cool to try a new thing. ("What, Emma? A new thing?" you say, and I say: stfu, I'll write a million stories about power dynamics and troubled boys if I want to.)

I also made oeufs a la neige. The directions at the link above are clear, lucid, and beautiful ... if you have some experience with whipping up meringues, which I didn't. I knew only that there was an evil secret that lurked in their manufacture, so that most of those who tried perished on the slopes. So I googled "how to make a meringue." And I found this site.

WEB 1.0 KNOCKOFF MARTHA STEWART: God, whatever you do, don't make them in a plastic bowl. That's social suicide.
EMMA: *looks at plastic bowl* Okay, well, that's not--
MARTHA STEWART: I wouldn't even think about making them by hand. It's far too much work.
EMMA: ... Is that why beating these with a fork is making my forearm feel like someone's run it over with a bulldozer?
MARTHA STEWART: Also, do not stop halfway to take a break. Wait, let me say that again in bold.
EMMA: But I need this arm for my line of work!
MARTHA STEWART: The tiniest bit of fat or egg yolk will wreck a meringue.
EMMA: FUCK.

Etc. But as it happened, Knockoff Martha Stewart is a big liar, or else oeufs a la neige are a lot less intense. I was able to make soft peaks very nicely, and while they didn't puff up to massive fat blimps during the poaching, they held together and sat deliciously in the custard sauce.

They're way too sweet for me. But that is heavily outweighed with the sense of triumph I get from having successfully done something that involves separating eggs. And they are surprisingly good if you put a pinch of salt on each oeuf and have it for breakfast, moaning occasionally, "boil faster, coffee, bring me my sweet morning lifeblood." (That last part is crucial.)
nextian: A curtain being drawn back, exposing the lyrics "In the kingdom of Spain there are such colors." (such colors)
This is exactly how I feel about cooking. In related news, yesterday morning I lost a life because I forgot to double-jump and my bathrobe caught fire. You can make up your own mind what parts of that story I made up.

And then [livejournal.com profile] bookelfe prompted me to write a revolution, so I spent hours doing research about al-Andalus! Reconquista: What If Andalusia Said "Fuck You" To Isabella and Ferdinand? And Mika Played An Emo Muslim Sultan? And Cote de Pablo Had To Speak Hebrew Again? (or an even more accurate subtitle, Reconquista: Emma Works Out Her Issues With Los Reyes Catolicos.)

I know with advertising like that it is hard to resist!

I'm going to miss this icon.

Reveal time! I wrote:

On the Initial Conditions of a Partnership, Gentlemen of the Road, for [livejournal.com profile] giddygeek, and
Five stories the Reader never began, If on a winter's night a traveler, for me [personal profile] livrelibre.

Under my cut are a lot of thoughts on the process. Yes, I wrote this ages in advance. As an apology for tl;dring all over everywhere, here is a pdf of Gentlemen of the Road formatted for ereader (courtesy of [personal profile] elf, who betaed for me) and here is the CD "Elvis Perkins in Dearland," which contains Doomsday, which is my favorite song of the moment. Think "Holland 1945" meets "Prenzlauerberg."

you hardwire, i'll try to play the guitar. ~2000 words, some violence. The counter-counter-revolution has its problems.

Set in the eyaiverse of original fic, although really all you need to know is that these are tetchy guerilla-revolutionary androids with lungs. With thanks to [personal profile] aria. For [livejournal.com profile] girl_wonder, and Fry, I'm sorry I'm such a massive liar. I really hope you like this even though it isn't in Russia. :P

Today, and this is a true story, I was on the phone to [livejournal.com profile] pushingmetaphor while she walked back from a rickety alley in the middle of the night, and as I got on the highway to go further into the San Gabriel Valley, a car merged in front of me with two feet hanging out of the trunk. I am choosing to believe it was a blow-up doll, but in honor of the event, have the next part of A Beginner's Guide to Practical Engineering. This is still all based on the eyai universe. And LA Confidential.

AND YOU THOUGHT WE'D FORGOTTEN ABOUT IT.

Warning for content, language, and a Google Maps knowledge of Los Angeles geography.

"You know," Katya says conversationally, "I like this apartment. Nice view."

She hears Irina snort behind her. "The elevator's broken. I'm less than impressed."

First, go vote here! It's the 32-character round of the Home Team Awesome Ladies Vote-Off. It is full of hard decisions.

Second, I put my fic up for grabs at [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary. Though I have written almost nothing and cannot imagine the Deep Emotions other people would want to wring from the literary FONT that is my fiction, I feel I should let you all know: Commentate away.

Third: 1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Turn on your music player and put it on random/shuffle.
3. Write a drabble related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it’s over. No lingering afterwards!
4. Do ten of these, then post them.

I picked reboot Trek. I also cheated a little, mostly on the punchlines. Most of this is gen, although there is some Spock/Uhura and Chekov/OFC. There is also a lot of crack.

nextian: Chibi Rahm Emanuel in a tutu. (pretty pretty princess)
I wrote fic! This is always a surprise to me. Both at the kink meme and both decidedly unkinky -- Kirk/Bones, in the Academy, with a fire alarm at two in the morning; Uhura/Gaila, in the Academy, with unexpected musical numbers.

I love the kink meme so much. Enormous and sprawling and enthusiastic and awesome. I love seeing the feral fans who have just started making journals and they're all called spockluver09 or yelchinpwr or enterprising or whatever, and Keenser is the stud of Starfleet, and there are RPers and anonjournals and ten freaking parts.

Last night I saw In the Loop, which I emphatically recommend to everyone in the world. It's a British film which is best described (by the NYTimes) as Spinal Tap meets the West Wing, and it stars Peter Capaldi as Malcolm Tucker, who's apparently a character from a sitcom (just when I think I know something about British television, siiiiigh) who I can only describe as Rahm Emanuel's love child by Frankie Boyle. (VERY STRONG LANGUAGE.) I'm going to have to airmail him a proposal immediately. It is obviously based on the war in Iraq and yet there is a line about David Cameron being prime minister, so it all becomes very chilling and terrifying instead of just unrelentingly hilarious. Go see it!
