This is DVD commentary for girl in the war.

Fair warning: I'm planning to include large swathes of original drafts of this story in my commentary. That means that this is going to be really, really long. And self-indulgent, but … well … that was a given.

i got a girl in the war, paul, i know that they can hear me yell )

CHAG SAMEACH, EVERYBODY.

In a weird way, this is as much my thesis as my actual thesis, considering I've been working on some form of this story for four years, and this iteration since August. So, so many thanks to [personal profile] aria for beta and for telling me to get over myself and post it already.

This is eleven thousand words long (I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO I AM ANYMORE); it's eyai fic (primer is here, masterlist is here). Contains abuse of power, governmental collapse, journalistic excellence, murder, and no hansom cabs at all.

ETA: Oh, god, I'm actually sticking an ETA on this because it's freaking me out so much. YOU GUYS, I APOLOGIZE SO, SO MUCH FOR ONE PARTICULAR PLOT POINT IN THIS. SO MUCH. I WOULD CLAIM IT WASN'T MY IDEA, BUT THAT WOULD ONLY BE ONE TINY, TINY FRACTION OF THE TRUTH.

I would apologize for doing this at midnight but actually I think we are now all officially on enough different time zones to justify any posting hour.

EYAI DRABBLES GO

All settings or none! All characters or none! Prompt, fic, discuss, do interpretive dance!!

(And for those who selected "what in the name of God": here's a writeup I did on Tumblr for [personal profile] pseudo_tsuga of what exactly I'm talking about.)

Eyai characters catching a taxi: a fundamental violation of the rules of the universe?

YES, if it isn't a form of public transportation, WHY IS IT IN THE STORY

No! In fact, you should write two thousand words about the history of eyai cabdrivers and the implications for foreign industry!

I have many questions and they all start with "what in the name of God".

EYAI REMIX

1. Have you written an eyai fic? Any eyai fic?
2. Do you want to remix someone else's?
3. YES YOU DO.

Entirely opt-in. Comment here with email and deadline times that would be good for you. (I'm thinking end of August.) If you want to participate and there's a fic you want to be off-limit, let me know.

WELL that post was inspiring and creative.

So far this month, I've gotten two AMAZING presents. I want to be super clear here because it is always nice to thank people even if you think what they gave you is a pile of smelly garbage, all the praise in this post is totally sincere and you should check this stuff out, ladies and gents.

My Yuletart gift is a sculpture of Wendy and Lacey from the Middleman having an ice cream fight on the couch. !!!!! It's just so adorable and alive and enthusiastic and in character. It's a chibi statue and it's in character! It looks like a screenshot from the show come to life and chibified and I love it to pieces.

My eyai Yuletide gift (by [livejournal.com profile] fahye), "torque and other nouns", is ... by Fahye? Do I have to use more words? It's a character piece set during the Revolution and it's full of London scene-setting and action and cameos, and you should read it.

Though to be honest eyai Yuletide to date has been like a series of awesome gifts. The other two (besides mine) are Fry's Byproduct of an Insurrection and Aria's inertia. I am loving the physics naming system, by the way. I fully expect -- I fully demand -- that whoever posts in January name theirs "Spacetime Acceleration Action-at-a-Distance Momentum III: Quantum Physics Strikes Back."

you hardwire, i'll try to play the guitar. ~2000 words, some violence. The counter-counter-revolution has its problems.

Set in the eyaiverse of original fic, although really all you need to know is that these are tetchy guerilla-revolutionary androids with lungs. With thanks to [personal profile] aria. For [livejournal.com profile] girl_wonder, and Fry, I'm sorry I'm such a massive liar. I really hope you like this even though it isn't in Russia. :P

I have to wake up in four hours to get on the road for six, and I want to die a little bit, because I am wide awake. I mean, completely, may never sleep again wide awake. So, here is my DVD commentary for skin is, my.

... I have just noticed that "skin is, my" has a notice on it, in very official terms, stating that it takes place AFTER the Iron Revolution. That is the exact opposite of the word I wanted to use. It takes place BEFORE the Iron Revolution; some six months to a year before.

I am curious as to what people think of this Reading of the Text, but mostly I just feel like a complete fool. I am sorry if I have ruined your characterization of the story because I am bad at prepositions, you guys.

TITLE: skin is, my
WORDCOUNT: ~5000.
THIS IS NOT: the counter-revolution. (It is set after BEFORE the Iron Revolution.)
BUT YES THIS IS FINALLY: eyaiverse, for real.

(With love and exhaustion to [livejournal.com profile] pushingmetaphor, [livejournal.com profile] schiarire, [livejournal.com profile] girl_wonder, and [livejournal.com profile] fahye, who have listened to me wail for two years now about how I'm never going to write an eyai story that's original, never, ever, my life is so hard, and who have kept me away from sharp objects and continuity errors.

And without further ado.)

Obviously, for every good writer, there's something in particular that makes them ten times better than the competition. In [livejournal.com profile] fahye's case that's her structure -- this is why she writes sonnets that make me want to, in equal quantities, a) do nothing but write sonnets for the rest of my life until I am that good, b) steal her brain like Sylar for the ability, c) give up writing because she did it best.

But apparently not only can she do that, she can do cybersteampunk, muslin skirts, chaos theory, psallopianos, keys, clocks, photographs embedded in the text, nursery rhymes, love, bordellos, revolutions, London, and the end of the world.

Which is to say: [livejournal.com profile] fahye wrote [livejournal.com profile] ariastar and me a five thousand word sonnet.

Which is to say: go read it.
