nextian: Rory Williams looks up. (boy who waited)
(This entire post was won by [livejournal.com profile] cmattg in the [community profile] help_pakistan auction. His prompt is spoilery for the Doctor Who finale so it's under the following spoiler text: 1800+ years, Rory must have inspired at least one artist, yes? I would therefore like THE BALLAD OF THE LONE CENTURION in your best faux-folk style. It can be slightly tongue-in-cheek but mostly serious, please. My post itself is probably only spoilery if you've seen episode twelve and not thirteen, but caveat lector.)

So as a lot of you know, I am a history major suffering through the first throes of thesis work, and last year I was very nearly pulled into a vortex of medievalism by a teacher who was really into the Ottoman Empire. He's teaching at Haverford now and he put up his booklist for the classes he's doing this fall, and on a whim I JSTORed the articles, and it kind of turns out that folk music is hilarious as a historical document because it comes from all over the place and all over the time.

For some reason I got really enamored of this one, even though it doesn't sound like anything really from the Childe ballads and is probably a contemporary invention. It might be because it baffles the crap out of the musicologists.

OKAY, first of all, [community profile] white_lotus: for all your Dreamwidth A:TLA needs! They're holding a flash challenge for post-series stuff, so, do that.

Second of all: if you were notified about the LJ purging of "inactive" journals and communities, be aware that they've changed it (after I started posting in all my old communities) to only purge communities or journals that have one entry and no comments on that entry, and then only after 42 days of warning notice. I hate them kind of a lot right now.

Those of you who are on my flist on LJ should be aware that I'm going to do a massive flist cut in the near future -- not out of any animosity, but because I've pretty much stopped using LJ as a social media site. Unless I know you well and you don't crosspost to Dreamwidth I'll be removing you. This shouldn't be a problem for most people because OpenID is always open over here, as are anonymous comments, but if it is, please let me know. Basically if I had you friended a month ago you will have access to my DW barring unforeseen circumstances.

Thirdly: the monster at the end of this book, ~800 words, Homestuck/Doctor Who. Spoilery as hell.

Catching up on Who and pregaming for Pink Saturday: a fairly magical experience. Oh fuck I love this show. I mean Vampires in Venice is terrible, Amy's Choice is going to depress me terribly, but being slightly drunk and very enthusiastic about this harem is making my life PRETTY GOOD SO FAR.

No spoilers in comments, OBVIOUSLY.

What do you wear to parties when all your skirts are long and all your shirts are drapey or hideous?

I watched this great tv show last night! It was by turns terrifying and hilarious, definitely geared towards children but fully capable of holding adult interest. The main characters are flawed but profoundly endearing and they're making stupid and freaky choices about their lives but they aren't lying to themselves about it. I didn't have to turn my brain off but I did have to turn on the lights at one point so the monster wouldn't get me. And IT WAS DOCTOR FUCKING WHO.

SHOW! I HAVE MISSED YOU SO FUCKING MUCH

So, this weekend was a little slice of amazing. In which I:

1. had a Passover Seder in a hotel room with my family -- and it was fabulous, by the way, and I have leftovers right now in my dorm room, and the hotel room smelled like shank bone the whole time we were there, after which we

2. watched Live Free or Die Hard, which was ridiculously awesome, and -- yes -- did have the world's best car chase in it. And also Justin Long, with whom I am more than a little in love (my parents call him, mysteriously, "your boyfriend that nerd kid from Galaxy Quest." Why Alan Rickman, who is also in Galaxy Quest, didn't live in their memory this way I will never know.) Then the next day we

3. went to Wicked. Two subpoints on this one:
a) Where is the femslash? I want the good stuff! I will review this play for you in comments if you'd like, but do not want to clutter an uncut post.
b) Distressingly, I have a crush on the Wizard.

4. saw the New Pornographers and Okkervil River.
a) Okkervil River: I am the only person who thinks that this is what the Decemberists look like to people who do not love them, but honestly, A Stone eta: here is like really early Colin, and I wish the musicianship all round was a little tighter and also that Will Sheff did not feel so sorry for himself. But I think a lot of you, especially those of you who are bandslash folks, will enjoy this band if you do not already! If anyone has good covers of their songs, I would also enjoy hearing them, because I like "Ends With a Fall" and "A Stone" and that one about Marie and even "Westfall" but I cannot listen to Will Sheff too much.
b) THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS DO NOT NEED DAN BEJAR OR NEKO CASE TO ROCK. Patter-free concert. Very efficient rocking. I went with an a cappella groupmate; we do Bleeding Heart Show, so when they performed it we jumped up and down and harmonized the shit out of that song. So much fun.

5. Saw the first two eps of season four of Who, both of which I enjoyed, ridiculous and Rusty-problematic though they were. Am not looking forward to ep three from the reviews I've seen but am really, really fond of Donna. Really really fond.

Tonight I have to:

1. write a whole paper.

OKAY I SWEAR THIS IS REALLY THE LAST POST FOR TODAY

once again: spoilers for DH and Doctor Who )

We've arrived in Ashland safe and sound. (Sorry, Shira, that means no hanging out today; I'll be in Oregon till ... Friday, I think.) I feel like I'm here to renew my vows with the town. We're staying in this bed and breakfast that's actually some family's big ol' house and surrounding cottages, in two suites, tasteful flowered wallpaper, copies of the Stories from Shakespeare, framed cat cartoons and all. Also there are no TVs but there are fireplaces. If you know me you know that I am rather ridiculously happy.

I drove part of the way up, very nerve-wracking but also exciting, and when I wasn't driving Eli and I sat in the back of the car and watched "Utopia." For his reactions on that, you'll have to see last night's post, which he insisted on making. It basically sums up mine, except for my parallel squee of "Derek Jacobi! I Claudius!" Also, David Tennant is a fox. But I feel terribly guilty for briefly introducing him to the concept of livejournal. I have this suspicion that he will want to join it, and then I will have to tell him where mine is, and then I will have to friendslock every single piece of slash I have ever written down deep. Or get a new journal.

Then we stayed up until eleven o'clock discussing a) who the Master was and why I thought he was important, b) who Romana was and why I thought she was important, c) if the Doctor had cheated on Rose, d) why the Daleks were such jerks, e) why Merry and Pippin were important to the general flow of the plot (he hasn't read Return of the King yet.)

He may get on my nerves occasionally, but I suspect we're raising him right.

Today we're going river-rafting, and then, I'm guessing, they're going to want to go for a walk around the Plaza, which, been there will do that extensively over the next four days guys, but it means that I may be online some point this evening. We'll see. I'm hoping.

Yay! Jack!

I'm aware that I'm the last person in the universe to see the new Who, but I have now.

Incredibly pointless (but amused) observation of the day: Both Withnail and "I" have played slightly non-canon Doctors.

Now that's a cross-over I'd love to see.

I just dreamt an entire episode of Doctor Who -- called the Impossible Planet because I'm hugely original -- the next to last, the one in which Rose proves herself worthy and sets herself up for getting TOASTED, presumably. I was just watching it in my head when I realised I was asleep, which killed the ending to the episode. The first part was a bit disjointed -- there was a dueling law which Rose made up to settle some very petty conflict which I think was funny but I can't remember exactly...

... and then this dialogue happened. )

My brain thinks in coherent Doctor Who episodes, and brings in the Game to boot. I am such a dork. XD

I will be home tonight, ladies and gents.

(This will seem very strange if you have not in fact noticed that I have been gone, which might be understandable, PEONS.)

Points of interest:

1) Tell Aria not to wear a beanie. For serious.

2) Stuart Townsend does not make a convincing Dorian. Nevertheless, he gets points for going, "Growl," in that particular manner.

3) Happy birthday, Ji. *beams at you* In honour of your birthday I will admit to my new obsession with the word totes. I BLAME YOU. It is a horrible word and I totes want no truck with it.

SEE HOW WEIRD THAT SENTENCE SOUNDS. AUGH.

4) ... ... ... oh Rose. *is kilt by the Satan Pit*
