Current mood:befuddled
Current music:the six or seven songs i had to learn last night
Entry tags:dork: epistemological, dork: literary, music: mine, music: now live!, rec: movie, rl: bright college years, rl: ransom notes
It's been a ridiculous week. (Couple of weeks.) I keep drafting this post and deleting it, because it sounds stupid and itemized, so fuck it, y'all are getting the rough draft. (Isaac-down-the-hall told me quite seriously that I "sure use the f-word a lot", but that's okay because I'm "passionate." That makes two people. I -- I blame fascism.)

I'm taking Arabic (so hooray, all of you! you were v. right), Physics, Calculus for nerds (which seems to be actually more like Number Theory 101), and Human Being & Citizen. I'll scan my Human Being & Citizen notes when I finish the page; I've got this whole elaborate mural going on it because I don't actually take notes in English class. The teacher starts talking about epistemology and I start drawing Moby-Dick saying "sucks you be you!!" I feel like this is not inaccurate.

I still hate Plato. I will always hate Plato, and Socrates. Philosphical inquiry: you're doing it wrong. It's not that I don't like the idea of the rational, reasoned method, although Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance raises some questions in my mind, it's that Socrates and Plato don't use it because they're lying hypocritical jerks. But I would run away with Homer like that. (Also, Odysseus. "How could I call myself the father of Telemachus?" oh my god HE REMEMBERS HIM despite nine years of hell and Telemachus was totally RIGHT to be all "daddy still loves me" because Daddy is HURTING IN HIS SOUL, god I love the Iliad.)

I got called back to all the a cappella groups (!!) and then accepted into four out of the five (!!!!!) including the two I really wanted (!!!!!!!!!!) I've just accepted the Ransom Notes, but I am going to miss Men in Drag. Because. Because they were so sweet. And adorable. But the Ransom Notes are ... um ... better. Oh god, have I sold out? Am I a soulless bastard who turns down friendship for musical ability? Am I in a teen movie? Do I really care? Well ... no.

I haven't yet developed a life. This may happen eventually, but today is not that day. Instead I bump into people in between sessions of class, vocal practice, writing cracked-out violent musicals, doing my homework, and calling [livejournal.com profile] pushingmetaphor to bitch about classes. I did go and see Metric this week, which was awesome, and very fun. Emily Haines uses the word "enigmatic" in concert spiel, so I can still love her even though she is a soprano. Our house also showed Hot Fuzz night before last, which has crawled up on to my top five movie list and settled in. I would say I ship Danny and Nick? But that is sort of like shipping Inigo and Fezzik -- somewhere between "too obvious for words" and "brain-breaking". It's canon, though. I'm not kidding, it is. Go see it.

Okay. I think that covers most of the details. I'm going to go do more homework now.

Ohhh Hot Fuzz! That movie was so goddamn much fun. Crazy little British towns <3333

!! a capella!!! *awe*

Plato tends to not impress many of the more liberal kids these days (myself included). It can be pretty disconcerting, though, because you see his thought in--jesus christ--almost all of the rest of Western philosophy down the line. Someone should do an AU where he never existed. Man, that'd be whacked-out. Re Odysseus: the conversations he has with Athena! The conversations! So dorky awwwww.

I -- I am actually way more excited about the a cappella than those exclamation points let on, but, um, they rushed me last night? Like, they came by my room and sang a song? Apparently they do this to all the kids they accept. However, I bet they do not go "HI -- oh my god you look like you're about to pass out, we'll make this super quick, oh god I'm sorry did I wake you up?" to every kid. Five hours of callbacks take a lot out of you.

I have friends who love him, though. I don't get it. He's such a dickhead. We had a conversation in class and I was the only one who voted to kill Socrates! Come on, he was guilty! If he doesn't believe that death is an evil, then give the fucker some of that good! -- and yes, someone was using the allegory of the cave as a parallel to Socrates, like that proved something, and I was like, "Dude. He wrote that about Socrates. This whole institution was founded on the idea of not killing Socrates. You cannot make an argument within the bounds of this institution's rules for its demolishing. This is unfair!!"

OH MAN and then when she stops time so he can go have sex with Penelope for HOURS. I ship them. (Odysseus and Athena. But also Odysseus and Penelope.)
